Everyone knows that John Wilkes Booth was the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, but not everyone knows John Wilkes Booth’s take on it. Like Why did he do it? Who were his accomplices? What happened after he did it? Well that is was this paper is about. John Wilkes Booth was born on May 10, 1838 in the state of near Bel Air, Maryland (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). He was the second youngest of 10 children, and was the son of the actor Junius Brutus Booth (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). Booth â€Å"showed excellent theatrical potential early on, but also exhibited an emotional instability† (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). John Wilkes Booth remained on demand after a â€Å"wildly acclaimed† tour of the South all the way throughout the†¦show more content†¦At about 6:00 pm Booth arrived at the deserted theatre, where he tampered with the outer door of the presidential box so that it could be jammed shut from the inside. He returned during the play’s third act to find Lincoln and his guests essentially unguarded. (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). Booth was now in the box of the theatre. On April 14, 1865, just after 10 p.m., Booth pulled a .44-calibre derringer and shot President Lincoln in the back of the head. â€Å"He grappled briefly with Union officer Maj. Henry Rathbone (who, along with his fiancà ©e, was in the box as the Lincoln’s guest), swung himself over the balustrade, and leaped off it, reportedly shouting, â€Å"Sic semper tyrannis!† (the motto of the state of Virginia, meaning â€Å"Thus always to tyrants!†) or â€Å"The South is avenged!† or both† (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). Booth next jumped off the stage, breaking his leg in the process, but managed to make it to his getaway horse before anyone in the shocked crowd could stop him (Biography April 28, 2017). The attempt to kill Seward did not succeed, but Lincoln died shortly after seven o’clock the following morning. (Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). This was now the time for Booth to escape,but he still needed help with his broken leg.
